How to reactivate a cancelled ABN

Check the status first. If it was cancelled, you apply again.

Need to reactivate a cancelled ABN? You cannot switch it back on with a button. The Australian Business Register (ABR) says you need to apply again. First, check whether yours is cancelled at all.

Step 1: check the status

Search your name or number on ABN Lookup. It shows whether an ABN is active or cancelled. The ABR says it shows "cancelled" only after the ABR has cancelled it.

ABN Lookup is read-only. It cannot cancel or issue an ABN, so you will need to contact the ABR to change anything.

Why ABNs get cancelled

An ABN is cancelled after you tell the ABR you have stopped trading or sold the business. Business.gov.au says you also cancel it when you change from a sole trader to a company or partnership.

The ABR also says you are only entitled to an ABN while you run an enterprise, and it checks from time to time.

Picture a plumber who took a full-time job, closed the ABN, and now wants to take on their own jobs again. They start at step 3.

Step 2: if it is still active

You do not need to reactivate anything. If your details have changed, such as your address or business name, update them through the ABR.

Step 3: if it was cancelled, reactivate by re-applying

  1. Check you are entitled again. You need to be running or starting a business. Our ABN guide covers who qualifies and what to have ready.
  2. Re-apply through the ABR. The ABR calls this reactivating, and says a cancelled ABN needs a new application. Business.gov.au says it is free.
  3. Check the result. Look up your ABN on ABN Lookup and confirm it shows as active before you print new invoices or write your next job quote.

The ABR pages we checked do not give a timeframe. Check with the ABR for the current wait before you plan your first invoice.

While you wait

Until your ABN is active, a business that pays you may have to withhold 47%. Our ABN guide explains how that works.

The ATO says that if you have applied, you and the payer can agree to hold back payment until the ABN is quoted.

Tell your customers early that the ABN is on its way. It gives them a reason to wait.

Check your GST registration

The ATO says you need an ABN to register for GST. If you were registered before the ABN was cancelled, confirm with the ATO or an accountant that your registration still applies.

Avoid paying for a free form

Business.gov.au says registering for an ABN through the ABR is free. Check the price before you pay anyone to lodge the form for you.
